CPSC 815 Special Effects Production
Fall 2002
Project 2

Objectives:
To learn the use of Apple Shake.

Motivation:
This multi-part project examines the features and funcionality of Shake, Apple's compositing software.

Due dates:
Project writeup and animations: 10/31/02

Description:
Use Shake to create several short animation clips:
  1. Chroma-keying: primatte/phonebooth & movies/clouds comp:
    • comp the primatte/phonebooth image over the movies/clouds clip
  2. Color correction: images/pier & images/sky comp:
    • color correct the images/pier to the images/sky image AND VICE-VERSA
    • use Shake's color correct node as well as the color curve editor node (lookup)
  3. Rotoscoping: movies/fiona:0174:0301 & movies/clouds comp:
    • rotoscope movies/fiona (frames 0174:0301, just Fiona's face w/headphones) over the movies/clouds clip
    • note that the shape of Fiona's head changes and moves, you will therefore have to animate your rotoshape
  4. Match moving: movies/bomb & movies/water comp
    • matchmove on a movies/wave crest, and then comp the movies/bomb CG element at that point; the movies/bomb element should appear to be ``riding the wave''
  5. Compositing: renderpass comp
    • put together the renderpass elements, cutting out the live footage of the real hallway carpet.
  6. Principal photography: Project 1 Redux (Gimp/Photoshop) in Shake
    • redo Part 2 of Project 1 by picking a simple object of which to take a photograph in front of a blue screen
    • use Shake's chroma-keying tools (your choice) to pull a matte for the object
    • comp the object over a background scene---make sure the lighting in the final scene matches!!
    • use Shake's dropshadow tool to create a shadow for the foreground element
    • set up a rig for the live action shot (e.g., use suspension wires or a table prop) and then remove this ``dirt'' in the final comp
